Before the favoured tea and coffee came about, Sahlep was and still is one of the most famous beverages in Turkey. The drink is made from Sahlep powder which is a mixture of different spices; this is what gives the beverage its unique taste. Sahlep is a hot, creamy drink; drunk during the colder, winter months in coffee shops all across Turkey. Most people drink the beverage to accompany a cake or a pie. Ingredients
I cup sugar
4 cups milk
1 teaspoon Sahlep powder
Method
Mix the Sahlep powder and the sugar together in a pan. Add the milk and stir constantly.
Heat the mixture, stirring constantly, until it boils again.
Let the mixture boil for 3 minutes and remove from the heat.
Serve the drink warm and garnish with powdered cinnamon.
Tips to remember
The Sahlep should be thick; the thicker the better.
This beverage is drunk as a remedy for sore throats and colds.
