In the summer, most people spend most of their time in their garden to soak up the beautiful weather. Some people host garden parties and some use it as a place to relax, sunbathe, eat and drink or just simply to sit in. Either way, it’s crucial that your garden looks in great shape and so here are some great tips that you can follow so that your garden looks its best this summer!
Weed
Weeding is a monotonous chore, but unfortunately it has to be done in order to make your garden look less messy. It’s the sort of job you have to persist at so it doesn’t get out of hand. The ideal time to weed is after light rain when they can be pulled out much easier. Weeding is also essential for those growing fruit and veg in the garden; weeds in the vegetable patch will steal the nutrients and water from the vegetables.
Water
Like weeding, watering is another job that you have to keep on with throughout the summer. Any plants in pots, hanging baskets etc should be watered lightly every day, otherwise you risk them drying up. The same goes for any newly planted shrubs, flowers or trees. And for the garden patch; leafy vegetables should never dry out. Other crops should still be watered often too, but vegetables such as spinach and lettuce are prone to drying out the quickest so make sure their constantly hydrated.
Feed
The garden feeding process can be very effective and show very pleasing results. This can also be reversed if you overfeed, resulting in weak and pathetic growth. Therefore, you have to make sure you do it right. Before planting in pots or hanging baskets, add in a slow release fertilizer at planting time. Apply a nitrogen feed until midsummer and then use a potassium feed.
Lawn
Keeping your lawn nice is one of the greatest challenges. Many try to keep in looking nice by watering it, but the lawn swallows up enormous amounts of water which is incredibly uneconomical, so it’s best to stop watering completely. As an alternative, consider feeding your lawn- the results are great! And, keep your lawn looking tidy by mowing it once a week.
