There are already far fewer places where smoking is allowed, initially banned in nearly all enclosed public spaces, including taxis. Come another few days, cafes, restaurants and bars will be included. It will remain to be seen how effectively this will be implemented, particularly in the light that those who have created this law will still enjoy the evil weed within their parliament building!
It is certainly a controversial step, with many business owners vehemently opposed, particularly during what are already difficult financial times, with many businesses losing money. There are mixed attitudes amongst the Turkish, with some saying they are pleased with the introduction of the new laws saying it is good for health, others totally opposed and a large majority believing the law just will not be enforced "It's Turkey, we'll find a way round it".
Penalties can run high, not only for businesses but for the individual who sparks up. Fines for individuals are around 40 euros, for businesses up to 3,200 euros.
It is difficult to imagine the ban being implemented, you only have to visit any cafe, restaurant or bar to see everything smoking continually, even throughout the whole course of a meal. It will be interesting to see if Turkey really can make this work.
